Last week I blogged about Good and our partners' Day One readiness for Apple iOS 7. Why is this a big deal? After all, Apple had their 900,000+ App Store apps ready for iOS 7 on day one.


In the consumer world mobile apps can function as self-contained units. However, in the business world mobile apps have to interact with other apps in order to provide users with the results that they’ve come to expect from PC-based enterprise applications. And because it is the business world, those interactions (e.g., sharing of documents, passing parameters, etc.) must be secure. If one app that’s part of a complex mobile workflow involving multiple apps is not ready for iOS 7, then the whole workflow goes away.


In the enterprise, a well-designed mobile app is one that is intuitive and saves time. Instead of trying to do everything, such a mobile app will perform one or a few related things very well. Therefore what might have been a general-purpose enterprise application for the PC will often translate into multiple mobile apps.


Because of this, interactions between multiple mobile apps are commonplace to accomplish what would have been done with a single PC-based application. Unfortunately, the most natural path is for a company to simply “port” that PC application to a single mobile app – but that would most likely produce a sub-optimal outcome.


Mobile platforms have unique constraints (e.g., screen size, battery power, processing power) and advantages (e.g., GPS, tilt sensor, touch screen, built-in camera, and NFC). Not designing specifically for the mobile platform will result in apps with a poor user experience. That translates into limited use of those apps because – right or wrong – our experience as consumers sets the bar for enterprise mobile app usability.


For an enterprise that wants to transform into a mobile first business, preserving the user experience while ensuring security of corporate information are both equally important. Compromising on the former will impact the ROI on mobile investment. Compromising on the latter could result in data theft or leakage.

At the same time, because these apps are containerized using the Good Dynamics Secure Mobility Platform, IT is assured of the security of corporate information throughout the entire workflow. For example, IT can make sure that a user accessing business data via a containerized browser cannot then copy/paste that information into a non-containerized app or into cloud storage from where data can easily be leaked.
